California Apostille Preparation
Before submitting your document for an apostille, you usually need to complete the Apostille Request Cover Sheet, identify the country where the document will be used, prepare the correct payment, and make sure your document is eligible for apostille processing.
When you go to the California Secretary of State for an apostille, one of the first things you need is the Apostille Request Cover Sheet. This form tells the Secretary of State where the document will be used, how many apostilles you are requesting, and how the completed document should be returned. Without the correct request form, your submission may be delayed or rejected.
Fill out the request cover sheet before submitting your documents. You will need to list the destination country, your contact information, and the number of apostilles requested.
You must know the country where the document will be used. The Secretary of State uses this information to determine whether an apostille or authentication is needed.
California charges a state fee for each apostille. In-person requests may also require a special handling fee depending on the public official’s signature.
This depends on the receiving country or institution. Some offices want the original document apostilled first and then translated. Others may want both the original document and the apostille page translated together after the apostille is attached.
